  1. MyFitness Pal

This app hits the top of our list for two reasons: it’s easy to use and totally free.

It is designed to help you keep track of your calorie intake against your fitness goals. You begin by entering your weight, height, activity level, and weight goal, and MyFitness Pal will suggest how many calories you should be eating a day. You can then scan the barcode or search their extensive library to enter the food you eat and keep to your calorie goals.

MyFitness Pal also tracks your macro and micronutrients, which means you can identify deficiencies to improve your diet.

  2. 7 Minute Workout

No time to go to the gym? That’s no excuse with the 7 Minute Workout app!

It hits no. 2 on our best fitness apps list because it’s a totally convenient and free way to exercise. It is full of workouts that can be completed anywhere and use nothing more than a chair, a wall and your own body weight.

It is based on the ‘7 Minute Workout’ column in The New York Times Magazine that uses scientific studies to create the maximum benefit of working out regularly in the shortest time possible.

  3. Full Fitness: Exercise Workout Trainer

If you want the benefits of a personal trainer but with minimal cost, then this app could be for you.

Full Fitness: Exercise Workout Trainer is the first app on our list with a price tag. But it is a minimal one at that. For only £2.29 you have access to hundreds of exercises developed by fitness pros. Each exercise is clearly explained with pictures, videos and text instructions, and sorted by body region, target muscle or equipment needed. You have the option of creating your very own custom exercises to meet your personal targets or using one of the 30 pre-defined routines. You can even log your exercises and track your progress with progress apps.

  4. Nike+ Running

Whether you’ve signed up for your first 5K or are looking to run a marathon, the Nike+ Running app gives you training programmes and daily workouts to help you reach your running goals.

Using your phone’s GPS the app tracks your distance, elevation, pace and time and provides audio feedback at every mile. You can also track and share your progress with friends to keep you motivated. Whatsmore, it’s totally free.

  5. 30 Day Fitness Challenges

If you’re looking to boost your fitness in just 30 days, then this free app is the perfect way to do it.

It’s full of workout challenges, which run over 30 days and include rest days. Begin by choosing your challenge and level. With 48 levels ranging from beginner to advanced, you can choose from ab, push up, squat, tones arms, firm butt, plank, thigh and cardio challenges. As the month goes on, workouts gradually increase in intensity, working you up to day 30, which is designed to test the fittest of us.

  6. Sweat With Kayla

This is the first and only subscription app on our best fitness apps list. At £14.99 a month, it’s slightly on the pricey side, but by joining, you’ll be joining the world’s biggest female fitness community of more than 3 million.

Led by Australian personal trainer Kayla Itsines, the app offers a 12-week programme with weekly coaching, 28-minute workouts, meal plans, and the ability to track your success with weekly selfies. Each week contains resistance, LISS, HIIT and rehabilitation workouts, depending upon which week you’re up to. As well as training exercises you’ll also have access to a daily menu and shopping list, helping you to plan out healthy meals and snacks for the week.

If you are serious and committed to improving your fitness, then this app is worth it.

  7. Sworkit

With results in as little as 5 minutes a day, Sworkit is a free personalised workout creator.

It allows you to create your own custom workouts from over 200 different exercises. Choose from strength, cardio, yoga and stretching, and select the length of your workout from 5 to 60 minutes. Then just follow the video trainer on screen as they guide you through each exercise.

If you prefer, there is an option to pick one of the pre-made workouts, which target a particular area of your body.
