With the plethora of supplements for weight loss out there, losing weight should be easy…or should it? Do these supplements actually work or are their claims a marketing fad? Glucomannan is one of these supplements, which has actually been approved by the EU commission. But does that mean that it definitely works? How does glucomannan work? And is glucomannan good for weight loss?

To answer these questions, let’s understand what glucomannan.

What Is Glucomannan?

Glucomannan is a natural, water-soluble, dietary fibre that is extracted from the roots of the elephant yam plant. It doesn’t sound like much, but the reason that glucomannan is good for weight loss is down to its ability to control our hunger. When it comes to weight loss, the biggest hurdle is often resisting hunger urges. Hunger makes us snack, which leads to increased calorie consumption.

So how can Glucomannan help?

How Does Glucomannan Work?

Glucomannan works in 4 ways:

It’s these hunger urges which are stimulated by the hormone Ghrelin, which is secreted by the stomach. When ingested, Glucomannan helps reduce Ghrelin secretions by signalling to the brain that you are full. It’s this mechanism which results in weight loss by ensuring you feel completely satisfied, reducing the urge to snack.

1. It makes us feel full for longer

Most of the time we feel hungry because our stomach has released the hormone, Ghrelin. Glucomannan helps to reduce the amount of Ghrelin our stomach releases, meaning we feel less hungry.

2. It reduces the absorption of fat

Studies have shown that glucomannan helps us to absorb less of the nutrient that makes us gain weight. This is because it is a soluble fibre that decreases fat digestibility.

3. It supports our gut

Glucomannan is believed to feed the friendly bacteria in our gut. Our gut and weight loss have been linked in multiple studies, which suggest the right gut bacteria leads to decreased body weight.

4. It makes us feel full quicker

As a soluble fibre, glucomannan absorbs water, which makes it expand in our stomach. That means that our stomach literally gets full quicker, leaving no room for more food.

Is Glucomannan Good For Weight Loss?

Now we understand how it works, how do we know if it actually works for weight loss?

Studies, carried out on 176 overweight people (wowee), comparing glucomannan with a placebo while on calorie-restricted diet found that it did work. After  5 weeks, weight loss was significantly higher for those consuming glucomannan when compared with the placebo.

So yes, glucomannan is good for weight loss and it does really work.
