The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy states that a towel is the most important item a hitch hiker can have.
According to the guide:
“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar Hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course you can dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”
We’ve come up with some uses for your towel on Earth, more specifically, at the gym!
Stretch your hamstring, calf and lower back muscles with your gym towel. Sit on the floor with your legs together, straight out in front of you. Holding each end of the towel, hook the middle of the towel over the balls of your feet and pull the towel towards you as you lean forward.
Gym mat/yoga mat
Use your towel as a yoga mat or to lean on when doing sit-ups to cushion your back against the hard floor.
Give your core and legs a workout by using your towel for sliding planks. Begin in a plank position with one towel under each foot. Slide legs apart and back together.
Alternatives: Begin in a plank position with the towel under your feet. Keeping your legs straight, raise your hips and slide your legs toward you into a pike position.
Dry yourself off with
Wear your towel around your waist to the swimming pool/sauna/steam room and use it to dry yourself afterwards (classic towel usage!)
Wipe sweat away
Go old skool and use your gym towel the traditional way – to wipe sweat off yourself and the gym equipment off after use.
