These 5 Superfoods Could Help Protect You Against Cancer

More and more evidence is emerging about the link between diet and cancer risk. Whilst no one food can combat the disease alone, research has shown that diets high in plant based foods can protect you against the risk of developing cancerous cells.

Here at Myvitamins, we’re taking a closer look at what specific foods you can eat to boost your body’s defences in the battle against the dreaded C-word.

Flaxseed is a great source of a class of phytonutrients known as Lignans, these are hormones very similar to oestrogen, the female sex hormone. Due to this similarity, flaxseed has been found to have anticancer effects on tumour growth in breast cancer tissues. However, it’s not just breast cancer that this lovely seed protects against, the high fibre and omega-3 content of flaxseed mops up bad cholesterol and toxins, ridding your body of the bad stuff! If that wasn’t enough…the potent antioxidant content of flaxseed protects our cells against oxidation and fights inflammation. Try adding a scoop of our flaxseed powder to 150-250ml of water or fruit juice for an easy way to get all these amazing benefits.

This lovely bushy green vegetable is loaded with Sulforaphane, a phytochemical which is responsible for helping to attack cancer stem cells; cells associated with the recurrence of cancer. The action of this phytochemical works in many clever ways, such as by inhibiting the enzymes that convert procarinogens to nasty carcinogens. All cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, cabbage, kale) have been found to have beneficial anti-cancer effects, so try blending broccoli and cauliflower with some soy sauce, garlic and chilli to make a healthy alternative to fried rice.

Green tea

Green tea contains polyphenols known as catechins, these compounds have been found to be successful at inhibiting cancer cell growth, particularly in breast cancer cells. Catechin also acts as an antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress within the body, getting rid of harmful free radicals. Green tea is loaded with vitamins which have many other benefits within the body such as weight loss and improved brain function. Try taking a capsule of our super green tea extract daily to get all these super benefits!

Not only will beetroot increase the risk of having purple wee, it may also REDUCE the risk of cancer. As a natural detoxifier, beetroot cleanses the liver, kidneys and lymph system, BEETing out nasty chemicals within the body. The high vitamin C content of beetroot keeps the immune system in full working order and its antioxidant power gets rid of cancer causing free radicals.

Garlic may not be the sweetest smelling vegetable in the garden but it does offer amazing effects within the body. Research has shown that garlic can help protect against many different types of cancer, namely, gastric, oesophageal, pancreatic and breast cancer. The mechanism behind the protective effects of garlic is down to the work of Allicin, a compound that detoxifies damage causing cells within the body.  Make sure you stick to fresh garlic as this contains the compounds needed to fight off cancer in their bioactive form.
