What is it?
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a slightly altered form of the common omega-6 fatty acid; Linoleic acid, which is found in large amounts in vegetable oils. What makes CLA different from this type of fatty acid is the arrangement of double bonds in the molecule; the formation that gives CLA its beneficial properties. This fatty acid has gained a lot of attention within the health and fitness industry for individuals looking to burn fat, keep their hearts healthy and even get rid of cellulite.
Where is it found?
Intakes of CLA in the UK are currently low as dietary sources contain very small amounts of this fatty acid, you would need to consume excessive quantities of food to get the same dose as is contained in a supplement. The main dietary sources of CLA come from animal foods such as beef, lamb and milk. These sources, however, come with high levels of saturated fat and therefore, supplementation is recommended.
How Can I Benefit?
CLA has lots of fantastic uses within the body, due to its nutritional properties as an omega 6 fatty acid. A study posted in the Journal of Lipids found that 4.2g/day of CLA reduce body fat levels in participants without affecting body weight, great news for body builders! This multipurpose fatty acid has also been found to be beneficial for diabetics; it has shown to improve insulin action and reduce blood glucose levels, mimicking the action of diabetic drugs. As if all that wasn’t enough, here’s some more potential benefits of taking CLA:
- Improves immune function
- Increases energy metabolism
- Reduces body fat percentage
- Suppresses hunger
- Improves insulin action
- Reduces ‘bad’ cholesterol
- Lowers blood pressure
- Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
